“You’ve grown so much, Ross. I can’t believe it!” Mom said for what must have been the fifth time that evening. Ross smiled politely and sipped from his glass of water.

“Good genes, I guess,” he said with a smile. The three of us were sitting at the table eating Mom’s homemade lasagne, which was her all-star meal.

She hadn’t excepted me to bring Ross over tonight, but as soon as she’d finished fawning over him she’d run to the kitchen and assembled her best crockery and began making assembling the layers for the pasta dish. It tasted fucking great, like usual, but I could barely concentrate on the food in front of me because I was so focused on the interaction between Mom and Ross.

In my head, I was hoping that neither of them brought up anything inappropriate in front of the other. For my mom, that meant anything regarding Ross’s family life, especially his mom and for Ross- well, he could make anything inappropriate. So far, they were both doing alright, but the night was still young.

“What are your plans for after graduation? Have you looked at any colleges?”

“Mom,” I hissed.

“What?” she said, turning to me with an incredulous look on his face. “I’m just curious.”

“Not everyone wants to go to college, y’know,” I said pointedly. Mom seemed to think that the only route to success was by getting a college education, but even though I hadn’t decided if I actually wanted to go or not, I knew that was a lie. But then again, Mum was pretty comfortable with those.

Ross chuckled, flashing his perfect teeth to Mom and me. “I honestly don’t mind the question. I have applied to some colleges but I’m also considering taking a gap year to travel and stuff.” This was news to me and music to my mom’s ears. She clapped her hands with glee and her smile grew even wider.

“That sounds amazing. Where would you like to go if you did travel?”

“Oh, everywhere.” Ross sat back in his seat and his eyes went slightly glazed over as he imagined all the places he’d like to go. “I’d literally love to travel the world, get out of this damn town. Preferably not alone, but you know we’ll see.” Ross’s eyes met mine and the room suddenly became a lot warmer. Would he really want to travel the world with me? We’d barely spoken about what had happened the other day at the beach, let alone all the shit that had happened before I left. Did he really just expect us to skip to catching flights and getting matching boarding passes?

I looked over at Mom, hoping that she hadn’t picked up on anything between us- I’d never hear the end of it if she did. Besides, she’d put way too much pressure on things to go well, which was the last thing I needed.

Lucky for me, she was trying to chew the food in her mouth quickly so that she could shoot another question at Ross.
